NOAA National Weather Service has posted
“SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY”

Through Midnight Friday (07-09-10) for Zone: Coastal waters from South Santee River to Edisto Beach SC out 20 nm

This forecast zone governs the “safe” weather fishing criteria of the King Mackerel Division and Near/Offshore competition elements of the Sullivan’s Island Saltwater Classic. Tournament rules clearly state fishing will be postponed due to a stated or forecasted “SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY” for this zone on the primary designated fishing day (Saturday). As further stated in the rules the first alternate date will be Sunday.
As of this posting time, the following is what we expect to happen with the weather forecast later today and through the evening:

We expect the late afternoon and early evening forecasts to hold in place “SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY” through midnight. Then (most likely) the pre-dawn Saturday forecast “classification” will pull back slightly to “SMALL CRAFT EXERCISE CAUTION” which would mean technically by our rules the weather would be “fishable”. In reality, should NOAA-NWS make such a change in the forecast, it would cover the time window after most anglers would attempt to leave port. In our opinion the Saturday morning trip out the inlet(s) toward the offshore waters will be miserable to downright awful regardless of whether the forecast is SMALL CRAFT AVISORY or SMALL CRAFT EXERCISE CAUTION.
Additionally, we realize with a No-Checkout tournament format some anglers may be planning to enter the ocean and fish farther North or South of the tournament’s home port weather zone. At this particular time and instance the zones both to the North and South have much more favorable forecast with no “Small Craft” statements of any kind.
With these forecast factors in mind, along with plenty of personal experience with “sporty weather” issues we are making the following King Mackerel Division and Near/Offshore competition fishing format changes:

These competitions will be designated as fish either Saturday or Sunday. King Mackerel Division Teams and anglers may only fish one day. Should a team choose to fish SATURDAY they must designate that decision prior to 6:30 AM which is before “lines in”. Teams choosing SATURDAY must designate their intentions by stating both boat name and assigned tournament number to officials by one of only two available means; both of which will be automatically system time stamped for accuracy.
