Division: PRO Jensen Beach, Florida YAMAHA PRO TOUR - JENSEN May 14-15, 2011

ProMarineUSA.com/Kingpin Proves Consistency is the Way to Win! Tops Jensen Beach’s Pro Event!

By Jack Holmes

Jensen Beach, Florida-Captain Ken Dellane proved consistency is still the best way to win tournaments. He and Chad Hickman, Stevie Dellane, Chris Terry, and Chris Geschke, scaled a 42.33 on day one of the Jensen Beach leg of the Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour. It was the second biggest king of the day after Michael Kennedy, Mark Kennedy, and Richard Williams on the Simply Storage earned top honors with a 42.42. Then came Jim Vaughan, Randy Keys, Stephanie Matlock, Scott Snively, Mark Wilson, and Michael Fulgham on the Old Blue and scaled a 41.94 for third. It was then we knew that this tournament was going to live up to its reputation.

Ron Mitchell's Bandit team was at the scale on Saturday at noon after scoring early with the first baits in the water at 7:15. He and his team of Jeff Silverthorne, Spencer Ross, Mike Penny, Ryan Polen, and Bobby Wummer, only had a 27.89 for their efforts on Friday. But as they unzipped their fish bag at the dock we knew they would have the fish of the event. After sitting for three hours at the weigh in dock it was their turn at the scale. It settled at 56.24. Their two fish went onto the leader board at 84.13.

We went through several other teams before the Kingpin hit the dock. We had heard that they, too, had a nice fish. When the scale settled, it read 42.50. As I said before, consistency is the hallmark for winning events and this was no exception. Their two fish totaled 84.83, a little more than a half a pound better than the Bandit. The victory and the $15,000 prize was theirs.

Dellane and company fish an Evinrude powered Jupiter. The way the scores work they jumped from sixteenth place to third in the overall standings for the season.

David Tedder, Jeff Smith, and Brian Shore, fishing Team Zebra, a Yamaha powered Yellowfin berthed in North Carolina, had zeroed out on day one in Sarasota but with a third place finish in Jensen Beach, which included a 26.02, and a great 47.55 on day two, moved up significantly to ninth in overall Pro standings.

Bob and Susan Woithe, who captured both senior honors plus top lady for Susan after finishing fourth here in Jensen Beach with a combined two fish weight of 69.87, went from ninth to fourth overall.  They scaled a 31.32 and a 38.55.

Stacy Wester's Contender team, Big Bad Wolf, leading after the first event in Sarasota, only lost one place in the standings. They are seriously still in contention.

Leon Wilcox, James Hammonds, Jimmy Stecki, Peter Weisberg, and Alan McPherson, the Native Premonitions team, had boat problems but got help from the Getcha Some. They lent their boat to Wilcox and it was a lifesaver. Wilcox earned fifth, just out of the money, but kept them in the race for the title. They scaled a 37.54 and a 30.95.

Sixth place fell to Michael and Mark Kennedy plus Richard Williams on the Mercury powered Yellowfin named Simply Storage. They were the first day leaders but couldn't pull the trigger on day two and had to settle for a 20.73 for a combined total of 63.15.

Their first day fish came at 1:30, twenty-five miles south of Jensen. It ate a ribbonfish off the downrigger near the bottom in seventy feet of water. It was the area most teams were fishing in.

While I'm sure they were disappointed they still had a good event. They did not do well in Sarasota but are still in the hunt and that's all anyone can ask for when fishing at this level. This is a very good team!.

Crockett Henderson, fishing on Liquid Fire, the '08 Angler of the Year team, won the Top Junior angler honors. The team is now in eighteenth place but still has plenty of time to adjust especially with Fourchon, Louisiana coming up next.

Less than two pounds separated seventh from tenth place.

ProMarineUSA.com / Hannon's Cannon had a two fish aggregate of  62.67 which earned them seventh.

Eren's Addiction Too was eighth with a 62.33 aggregate and Old Blue picked up ninth with 62.12 points.

Rounding out the top ten was My Three Sons with 60.75 points.

That's real close fishing and shows the caliber of the teams.

The next stop on the Tour is Fourchon, Louisiana, home to some very big kings. With no pressure on the fish stocks for a year and a half fishing should be superb. With red snapper season opening June first there should be many fillets coming back east after the event.
